Khorzhak Monastery

Khorzhak Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastic complex situated near the Karnali River at approximately 3800 meters elevation in the high plateau region. The site features red-walled structures decorated with mantras and traditional inscriptions arranged in the classical layout of a Tibetan monastery.

The monastery was established in the late 10th century by King Khor-re and Prince Lha-de from Purang and became a major center of the Kagyu lineage in western Tibet. Its foundation marked a turning point in the spread of Buddhist teachings in this remote region.

The site remains an active center where monks conduct daily practices and maintain the spiritual life of the community. The decorated walls and sacred spaces reflect how Tibetan Buddhism shapes the place and its daily rhythm.

The site is most easily reached from Purang County, where local travel providers can arrange visits and guides. Visitors should prepare for the high altitude and harsh weather conditions typical of the region.

The monastery holds one of four sacred Avalokiteshvara statues transported from Nepal to Tibet in the seventh century. This image remains a focal point for pilgrims due to its connection to the early spread of Buddhism across the region.
