Ghorkha Palace

Ghorkha Palace is a palace complex in Nepal's hills built with stone and wood elements arranged across multiple levels following the hillside, with temples woven into the structure. The complex displays traditional construction techniques and distinct spaces serving both religious and administrative purposes.

King Prithvi Narayan Shah launched Nepal's unification campaign from this palace in the 18th century, establishing it as a center of political authority. This period marked the foundation of the modern Nepali state emerging from this strategic mountain location.

The palace grounds host multiple religious structures where Hindu and Buddhist practices coexist, revealing how Nepal's spiritual traditions shape the daily life and physical spaces. Visitors can observe these two faiths expressed through the architecture and use of different areas.

Reaching the palace requires a moderate uphill trek from the main road, with local guides available to assist visitors along the way. The dry seasons offer the best conditions for visiting, as trails are more stable and easier to navigate.

A major earthquake in 2015 caused significant damage to the structures, yet restoration efforts employ traditional building techniques to rebuild. This project demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship is being used to repair and sustain the site for future visitors.
