Ancient City of Qalhat, Archaeological site in Sur region, Oman

The Ancient City of Qalhat spreads across a coastal cliff, showing stone structures, walls, and a water system from a medieval maritime trading center. The remains reveal the layout of residential areas, storage buildings, and public spaces that once formed a busy trading city.

The city was founded in the 13th century as a major port for trade routes between the Indian Ocean and Arabia. It declined as trading pathways shifted and was eventually abandoned, leaving behind only ruins of its former importance.

The Bibi Maryam Mausoleum remains the main standing structure here, displaying Persian architectural elements with finely carved stonework. The niche and decorative patterns reflect the trading wealth that once flowed through this port.

The site lies north of Sur and is accessible by vehicle, with informational signs explaining the structures present. Wearing sturdy shoes and bringing sun protection is advisable, as the area is fully exposed.

A hidden system of underground ceramic pipes connects stone basins, revealing how residents distributed water efficiently across the settlement. This engineering solution was remarkably advanced for a medieval port city.
