Muscat International Airport, International aerodrome in Seeb, Oman
Muscat International Airport is an international aerodrome in Seeb, Muscat Governorate, positioned roughly 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of the capital. The facility extends across more than 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) and features two parallel runways built to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
Flight operations began here in 1929 at Bayt al Falaj before the facility relocated to its present site and opened as Seeb International Airport in 1973. A comprehensive redevelopment between 2014 and 2018 expanded capacity and modernized infrastructure considerably.
The terminal displays Omani elements in wall panels and ceiling designs, while public areas arrange seating groups in the style of traditional majlis gathering spaces. Travelers find local calligraphy and geometric patterns along the corridors, making the country's heritage visible.
Terminal 1 offers 118 check-in counters and 82 immigration desks, operating around the clock for up to 20 million passengers each year. Visitors find signage in Arabic and English, spacious waiting areas, and access to currency exchange, shops, and restaurants throughout all zones.
The facility became the first international aerodrome worldwide to implement an operational drone detection system in 2019. This technology monitors unmanned aircraft in the area and helps prevent disruptions to flight operations.
