Hinulugang Taktak, Protected waterfall in Antipolo, Philippines
Hinulugang Taktak is a waterfall in Antipolo that drops down through a landscape of native trees and rock formations. The water collects in a natural pool below where visitors can cool off and swim.
The area was declared a national park by law in 1990 to protect it. After decades of visitor use, restoration work later brought the site back to its natural state.
The name comes from a local story about a bell that residents once threw into the water because it was too loud. This tale remains part of the community's identity and gives the place special meaning for locals.
Access is by way of Taktak Road, which is relatively close to the city center. Several hotels and restaurants are nearby if visitors want to stay longer or grab food.
The waterfall underwent major restoration work in the early 2000s, where not only nature was brought back but visitor areas were also added. This shows how a place can be cared for while staying open to the public.
