Zamboanga Cathedral, Modern Catholic cathedral in Zamboanga City, Philippines.
Zamboanga Cathedral is a modern Catholic cathedral located on La Purisima Street in the center of Zamboanga City, on the island of Mindanao. The building follows a cruciform floor plan and features a tall tower rising from its central section that can be seen from a distance.
The current building replaced an older structure on the same site and was completed in 2002, giving the Archdiocese a new main church. The construction changed the overall look of the site, moving away from the older colonial-era style that had defined the previous building.
Inside the cathedral stands a marble statue of the Immaculate Conception made by sculptor Napoleon Abueva, one of the Philippines' most recognized artists. The statue draws local worshippers who come to pray quietly before it, especially on Marian feast days.
The cathedral sits in the city center and is easy to find on foot or by local transport. As an active place of worship, visitors are expected to dress modestly and keep quiet inside, especially during Mass or other services.
The Century Bell Tower, added in 2010, was built to mark one hundred years of the Archdiocese and stands as a separate structure from the main building. Many visitors assume it was built at the same time as the cathedral, but it was completed nearly a decade later.
