Calauit Safari Park, Safari park in Busuanga, Philippines.
Calauit Safari Park is a nature reserve on an island north of Busuanga, where African animals live in open surroundings. The grounds stretch across wide grasslands and forest sections that provide habitat for giraffes, zebras, and native species.
The facility was created in the mid-1970s as a government project. Animals were brought from Kenya to Busuanga, where they adapted to the tropical climate over several generations.
The name comes from the island itself, which now serves as home to both animal groups. Visitors watch giraffes and zebras graze alongside Philippine deer in a shared landscape, where both groups have lived together for decades.
A short boat trip leads from the mainland to the island, where guided tours through the area are organized. Paths are mostly unpaved, so closed shoes and sun protection are helpful.
The population includes fourth-generation animals born entirely under Philippine conditions. Some giraffes developed a darker coat pattern than their Kenyan ancestors through the local diet.
