Harappa, Ancient archaeological site in Sahiwal District, Pakistan.
The ruins of Harappa extend across 150 hectares, featuring grid-pattern streets, uniform buildings, drainage systems, and a fortified citadel with defensive walls.
The settlement originated around 3500 BCE and reached its peak during 2600-1900 BCE as a major urban center of the Indus Valley Civilization.
The site contains numerous steatite seals with animal engravings and undeciphered writing, revealing a sophisticated system of identification and administration.
Researchers access the archaeological site through the modern village of Harappa, located 24 kilometers west of Sahiwal in Punjab province.
British colonial authorities removed many original bricks from the ancient structures to build the Lahore-Multan railway track ballast.
