Benazir Bhutto International Airport, International airport in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
Benazir Bhutto International Airport was an international airport in Rawalpindi District, Pakistan, serving the capital region with connections across Asia and the Middle East. A single terminal building managed all departures and arrivals, with gates arranged to handle both domestic routes and flights reaching cities beyond the country's borders.
The site opened in 1930 and served civilian aviation for nearly nine decades, handling flights as the region grew around it. In May 2018, all passenger operations moved to a newer facility closer to Islamabad, and the grounds became a military base under the name PAF Base Nur Khan.
Officials chose the name to honor a political figure whose life marked a turning point in the country's modern story. Her identity as a female leader in a region where such roles were rare gave the facility a symbolic weight for many travelers passing through.
The site now functions as a military installation and is no longer open to civilian travelers. Visitors flying to the capital region should use the newer airport located northwest of the city center.
After passenger flights ended, the air force took over the entire property and renamed it after a senior officer. The runways now serve only military aircraft, while the former terminals have been repurposed for other functions within the base.
