Świnoujście, Port city in West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland
Świnoujście is a port city in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland, spreading across several islands where the Świna River meets the Baltic Sea. The different city districts sit on Usedom and Wolin, linked by ferry routes and bridges, with wide sandy beaches running along the shoreline.
The settlement began in 1765 as a fishing village at the river mouth and quickly grew into an important trading port. During the 19th century it expanded into a major military and naval base.
The name derives from the Slavic word for swine, referring to the island location and early settlements. Today locals use the wide beachfront promenades for walks and regularly visit the spa facilities along the coast.
Ferry connections between the islands run regularly throughout the year and provide access to all city districts. Beach visits work best during the warmer months, while the spa facilities remain open even in winter.
A brick lighthouse rises 68 meters (223 feet) into the sky and continues to serve navigation on the Baltic Sea. It marks the entrance to the harbor and stands visible from far along the beach.
