Altstadtbrücke, Steel arch footbridge between Görlitz, Germany and Zgorzelec, Poland.

Description

The Altstadtbrücke is a modern steel arch bridge spanning about 80 meters across the Neiße River. It connects the historic old town of Görlitz with the Polish city of Zgorzelec and serves only pedestrians and cyclists.

History

A bridge has stood at this location since 1298, was rebuilt in 1906, and was destroyed in 1945 during World War II. The current steel structure was completed in 2004, restoring this vital connection between the two cities.

Culture

The bridge serves as a daily crossing point where Germans and Polish residents move freely between the two cities. You notice people on foot and bikes stopping to chat or enjoy the view from the middle, making it a social space where both communities naturally gather.

Practical

You can easily reach the bridge on foot from Obermarkt, the main square just a short walk away. Nearby parking is available in the central area, and trams run regularly to serve the square.

Did you know?

Though it opened only in 2004, the bridge stands where an ancient Roman structure once crossed the river. This site has served as a crossing point for nearly 2,000 years, making it far older than the modern construction.
