Grodziec Castle, Gothic castle in Lower Silesia, Poland

Grodziec is a stone fortress built on a volcanic hilltop near Bolesławiec and rises about 389 meters above the surrounding plain. The structure features defensive walls, several towers, and a central courtyard that forms the heart of the fortification.

The castle was founded in 1155 under Bolesław I and was originally built from wood. It was later rebuilt in brick during the rule of Henry I and gained the form it maintains today.

The castle reflects how medieval people used fortifications to show power and control the surrounding lands. Today, the collections and events reveal how these fortresses served as centers of daily life and local authority.

You can reach the castle on foot by walking up a path that climbs the hill, which is a short but steep hike. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and keep in mind that access may vary depending on weather and season.

The castle sits atop an extinct volcano, which gave it strategic advantages and makes it a rare geological feature. From the top, you can look out over the entire surrounding landscape and understand why this position mattered for medieval defense.
