Gmina Wierzchowo, Administrative district in Drawsko County, Poland.
Gmina Wierzchowo is a rural municipality in Drawsko County, in the Pomeranian Lakeland region of northwestern Poland, made up of several villages and hamlets spread across a forested and lake-dotted landscape. The administrative seat is the village of Wierzchowo, where the local government offices are located.
The area was part of the Prussian province of Pomerania for several centuries and was home to a German-speaking population until 1945. After the end of World War II, it was incorporated into Poland and resettled by Polish families, many of whom came from territories in the east that Poland lost to the Soviet Union.
The name Wierzchowo is Polish in origin and reflects the resettlement that followed the border changes of 1945, when new communities were established across the region. In many of the villages, old German buildings stand alongside Polish traditions, giving the area a layered character that is visible to any attentive visitor.
A private vehicle is the most practical way to move between the villages, as public transport connections in this rural area are very limited. Spring and summer are the easiest times to get around, when forest tracks and lakeside paths are dry and open.
The municipality sits within the Drawskie Lakeland, a network of glacier-formed lakes and rivers that has shaped the layout of settlements here for generations. Several of the lakes within the area are connected by the Gwda River, which was historically used to float timber downstream to the Baltic coast.
