Mały Powstaniec, Memorial statue in Old Town, Warsaw, Poland.
Mały Powstaniec is a bronze memorial figure in Old Town, Warsaw, showing a boy wearing an oversized helmet and military coat. The work stands near the defensive walls at the crossing of two narrow streets and rests on a pedestal of red stone.
Sculptor Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz designed the figure in 1946 while volunteering in the reconstruction of the city after World War II. The unveiling took place after work on the defensive walls and lanes of the Old Town was completed.
The inscription beneath the figure quotes verses from a song sung by Warsaw children during the days of the uprising. A scout cross carved into the red sandstone beside the text recalls the youth members of the resistance movement.
The monument is located at the crossing of Podwale Street and Wąski Dunaj Street, near the eighth defensive tower of the Old Town. Visitors can view the work at any time from the pavement, as it stands openly accessible in the public space.
The work recalls the children who fought during the Warsaw Uprising, including Jerzy Romuald Grzelak, who was among the youngest active participants at age nine. The uniform and weaponry of the figure come from captured German equipment worn by the insurgents.
