High Synagogue, Kraków, Renaissance synagogue in Kazimierz district, Poland
The High Synagogue features prayer halls on the second floor, positioned above ground-floor shops within a residential building at Jozefa 38 Street.
Built in 1556 during the reign of King Sigismund II August, the synagogue suffered damages during World War II when German forces removed its liturgical items.
The eastern wall contains the oldest Renaissance Aron HaKodesh in Poland, decorated with stone frames and grotesque ornaments from the late 16th century.
The synagogue functions as a museum since 2005, presenting exhibitions about Jewish customs and traditions during the interwar period in Krakow.
Wall paintings discovered during renovations revealed decorative curtains and scenes of Jerusalem, including depictions of the Western Wall and Tomb of Kings.
