Gniezno locomotive depot, Railway roundhouse in Gniezno, Poland
Gniezno locomotive depot is a circular building with 24 tracks and maintenance facilities for steam engines. The structure has a rounded layout with water towers and workshops arranged around the central repair area.
The depot was built in 1875 following the opening of the Poznań-Toruń railway line. It became the main service hub for steam locomotives in the Greater Poland region.
The depot shows how railway workers lived and operated trains in the 1800s. The preserved buildings and equipment reveal the daily reality of that industrial era.
Visits are available on weekends by appointment through the local railway association. Plan to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the different sections of the complex.
The depot preserves an original wooden coal crane and a turntable from the late 1800s. These two pieces of equipment are among the last surviving examples of their kind and officially registered as national cultural objects.
