Ćmielów Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Ćmielów, Poland.
Ćmielów Castle is a fortress arranged in two main sections: a structure set on an island and an outer ward with a south gate tower. The preserved parts include wall segments, a ward gate tower attached to a building, and remnants of defensive bastions.
Construction occurred between 1519 and 1531 under Krzysztof Szydłowiecki, blending Gothic and Renaissance styles. This architectural mix shows how building styles were evolving during that period.
Multiple noble families shaped the place over centuries, with the Tarnowski, Ostrogski, Wiśniowiecki, Sanguszko, and Małachowski dynasties each leaving their mark. Their changing control reflects how power shifted among regional ruling families.
A good visit allows time to explore both sections and observe the details of what remains. Since this is a ruin, wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven ground.
A foundation tablet from 1531 remains visible above the entrance gate, recording the completion of the initial building phase. This stone inscription shows exactly when and under whose order the original construction finished.
