Crypt of Merit at Skałka, Crypt beneath a historic church in Stare Miasto, Kraków, Poland.
The Crypt of Merit at Skałka sits beneath the church on Skałka hill and features a single nave partially carved into the rock, creating a solemn memorial site for honored individuals.
The crypt was built in the late 18th century and remodeled between 1876 and 1880 to mark the 400th anniversary of chronicler Jan Długosz's death, establishing it as a national burial site.
The crypt serves as the final resting place for distinguished figures including poet Wincenty Pol, playwright Stanisław Wyspiański, painter Jacek Malczewski, and composer Karol Szymanowski, representing Polish cultural achievements.
Visitors can access the crypt by notifying the monastery gatehouse, with tickets priced at approximately 3.50 zloty for regular admission and 2.50 zloty for reduced tickets.
The crypt houses only twelve sarcophagi and has accepted just three new burials since World War II, including Nobel Prize-winning poet Czesław Miłosz in 2004.
