Bolesławiec rail viaduct

Bolesławiec rail viaduct, Stone arch railway bridge in Bolesławiec, Poland.

Description

The Bolesławiec rail viaduct is a stone arch bridge that stretches 490 meters across the Bóbr River valley and rises 26 meters above the water. Its design features 35 carefully proportioned arches that distribute the weight of passing trains.

History

Construction started in 1844 and was completed two years later, representing a major achievement in railway engineering for the region. The bridge became part of the Miłkowice-Jasień railway line that opened transportation routes for the growing industrial economy.

Culture

The viaduct stands as a landmark that shaped the region's industrial growth and remains part of how people understand their local identity. It connects communities on both sides of the river and has become woven into the town's character.

Practical

The best views come from ground level along the river banks, where you can fully appreciate the arch structure and scale. Accessible paths run on both sides of the Bóbr, making it easy to walk around and observe the bridge from different angles.

Did you know?

When darkness falls, 58 lights mounted on the inner sides of the pillars illuminate the entire structure, creating a glowing effect that transforms how the bridge looks at night. This lighting system was added in 2006 and gives the viaduct a different character after sunset.
