Christ the King statue, Religious monument in Świebodzin, Poland.
Christ the King statue is a large white concrete monument rising on the outskirts of Świebodzin and visible from several kilometers away. The figure wears a golden crown on its head and rests on a tall earthen mound with a wide stairway leading up to the base.
Work began in 2005 under the direction of local priest Sylwester Zawadzki, with all funding coming from voluntary donations by parish members. The dedication took place in November 2010 by the Archbishop of Szczecin in a large ceremony.
The figure arose from the wish of a local parish priest who wanted to create a strong religious symbol after Poland's political transition. Today pilgrims from across the country come here to pray in the small chapel below and light candles.
The site sits clearly visible near the expressway and offers free parking spaces right on location. Those climbing the stairs should allow enough time and energy, as the ascent to the platform takes several minutes.
The head had to be lifted twice during construction, slipping from the crane slings on the first attempt and nearly falling. The finished monument weighs 440 tonnes in total and is considered one of the heaviest Christ statues worldwide.
