Krosno lies on gently sloping plains of the Lower Beskid mountain range, surrounded by forests of beech and white fir trees. The built-up area spreads across several rises and offers views of the wooded slopes all around.
The founding took place in the fourteenth century when a fortified trading center for cloth, linen, and Hungarian wine developed here. In the later Middle Ages, trade continued to grow and shaped the economic life of the settlement.
The central square shows houses with continuous arcades from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, including the Burgomaster House erected in 1525. This construction links the buildings into a closed row still used by residents and visitors today.
The town functions as the center of Poland's mineral oil industry and houses factories producing glass, textiles, and electrical machines. Visitors find workshops and production sites distributed around the town center.
The regional museum displays artifacts from the first oil well in the world, marking the birthplace of the petroleum industry. This collection documents early drilling techniques and tools from the mid-nineteenth century.
