Toszek Castle, Medieval castle in Toszek, Poland
Toszek Castle is a medieval fortress with Renaissance elements in the Silesian town of Toszek, Poland, made up of a northern wing, an eastern wing, and a tower. The tower rises above the rest of the structure and can be seen from a distance across the surrounding area.
The fortress was founded in 1222 as a defensive stronghold and was extensively rebuilt in the late 14th century under Archbishop Boleslaw, who transformed it into a brick structure. That rebuilding gave the castle the form it still holds today.
The castle serves today as an active venue for concerts, theater performances, and exhibitions that take place throughout the year. The medieval walls create an unusual backdrop for contemporary events attended by both locals and visitors.
The castle courtyard is open during daylight hours and can be visited without any prior arrangement, making it easy to walk around the exterior and grounds at your own pace. If you want to see the interior, it is worth planning ahead since guided visits are not available every day.
Each summer, the castle grounds host the Brewerie Toszeckie festival, during which knights in period costumes perform combat demonstrations both on foot and on horseback. The tournament takes place directly within the old walls, making it one of the more unusual medieval events held in Silesia.
