Gietrzwałd

Gietrzwałd is a pilgrimage site in the Warmia-Masuria region with a large basilica featuring white walls and twin towers surrounded by gardens. The grounds spread across a spacious area with shaded paths that connect various religious monuments and small chapels throughout the property.

In 1877, two local girls reported seeing visions of the Virgin Mary at this location, which the Catholic Church later recognized as authentic. This event transformed the site into a center of religious devotion and prompted the construction of the basilica and other religious structures.

The place holds deep religious meaning for pilgrims who come because of the reported vision and participate at the various prayer stations throughout the grounds. Visitors walk the rosary paths and drink from the spring water, which many consider to have healing properties.

The grounds are easy to navigate and have well-marked walking paths connecting the different areas of the site. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes as visiting the site involves walking through various sections and exploring the outdoor spaces.

The girls who witnessed the visions spoke with the Virgin Mary in their own Polish language rather than in a church language. This unusual aspect of the events left a deep impression on the local community.
