Stawiszyn, Municipality in Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland
Stawiszyn is a small town and the administrative center of a rural commune in Kalisz County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, in central Poland. It sits just north of Kalisz and serves as the seat of the surrounding gmina, which includes several nearby villages.
Stawiszyn is one of the older towns in the region and was granted town rights in the medieval period. During the German occupation in World War II, it was renamed Stavensheim in 1943 as part of a policy to erase Polish place names.
The Jewish cemetery in nearby Stary Kiączyn still has gravestones carved with Hebrew inscriptions and plant motifs. These stones date from the 18th and 19th centuries and stand as a visible reminder of the Jewish community that once lived in this part of Poland.
The town is easy to reach from Kalisz, which is the nearest larger city with good transport connections. A visit to the surrounding commune, including the Jewish cemetery in Stary Kiączyn, works well as a half-day trip from Kalisz.
Although Stawiszyn holds town status, its built-up area is among the smallest for any town in Poland. This means it functions officially as a town while looking and feeling much more like a village to anyone walking through it.
