St. Florian's Gate, Medieval city gate in Old Town, Poland.
St. Florian's Gate is a medieval city gate standing at the northern edge of the old town in Kraków. It features Gothic architecture with carved stone details on both sides and a Baroque metal dome at its top.
The gate was built in 1307 as part of the city's defenses following a Tatar raid. It remains the sole survivor from eight medieval gates that once guarded the city.
The gate marks where Polish kings and dignitaries entered the city on their way to the castle. Today, it signals the start of a famous walking route that guides visitors through the heart of the old town.
The gate sits at the northern end of Floriańska Street and remains accessible at all times. You can walk along the adjacent defensive walls for a fuller experience.
A narrow gauge tram ran through this gate from 1901 to 1953, with conductors manually retracting the pantograph each time it passed. This daily routine became a distinctive feature of city travel for generations.
