Chropaczów, Residential district in Świętochłowice, Poland
Chropaczów is a residential district in the northern part of Świętochłowice, a city in the Silesian region of southern Poland. The terrain is hilly, and the area has schools, health services, and small shops spread across its streets.
Chropaczów appears in written records for the first time in 1295, when a Silesian duke divided his lands among his heirs. During the 19th century, the growth of mining transformed the area and drew workers from across the region.
The name Chropaczów has Slavic roots that point to a settlement long predating the industrial era. Walking through the streets, you can still notice rows of workers' houses built during the mining years, giving the area a very particular look.
The district is connected to the center of Świętochłowice and nearby areas by bus lines, so getting around on foot or by public transit is straightforward. Most services are located along the main roads and are easy to find.
In 1909 the settlement's name was officially changed to reflect the dominance of the local mining operation at the time. This makes Chropaczów one of the few neighborhoods where a name change can be traced directly to the influence of a single industry.
