Forest Opera, Open-air theatre in Sopot, Poland
The Forest Opera in Sopot is an open-air theater set within a woodland hollow with seating for about 5,000 spectators and an orchestra pit below stage. Forested hills surround the venue, creating natural acoustics and an outdoor performance space.
The venue was founded in 1909 and served as a location for opera and music performances in the region. Over the 20th century, it grew into a known cultural center with international significance.
The site hosts opera and music festivals that have drawn performers and audiences from across the region for decades. Performances in the open air create a special connection between the music and the natural forest setting.
Access is via a forest path that branches off from ul. 1-go Maja street. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the path climbs uphill and the ground can be uneven.
The woodland hollow was carefully shaped so the surrounding steep hills naturally frame the stage on all sides. This geographic feature makes it one of the few opera houses in the world completely surrounded by natural hillsides.
