Rybnik municipal stadium, Municipal sports stadium in Rybnik, Poland
Rybnik municipal stadium is a multi-sport venue in the city of Rybnik, southern Poland, built around a grass football pitch encircled by a speedway track. The stands are partly covered and the playing field is equipped with both heating and irrigation systems.
The stadium was first opened in 1939 with a clay track and went through several phases of change over the following decades. A major renovation completed in 2013 brought the facilities in line with current football standards.
The stadium is home to both the local football club and the city's speedway team, and fans of both sports share the same stands. On race days, the oval track transforms the whole feel of the venue, drawing a crowd that is noticeably different from a football matchday.
Checking in advance which sport is scheduled on a given day is worth doing, as the layout of open areas and viewing spots changes depending on whether football or speedway is on. The speedway season and the football season do not fully overlap, so the venue has activity throughout much of the year.
Speedway bikes have no brakes and only one gear, which means the racing is extremely close to the track edge and spectators sitting near the fence can feel the gravel thrown up by the wheels. This is something that first-time visitors rarely expect and that sets the experience apart from any other live sport.
