Gródek, Białystok County, Village in Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland
Gródek is a village located close to the Belarus border in northeastern Poland's Podlaskie region. It serves as the administrative hub for the surrounding municipality, positioned roughly 33 kilometers from the regional city of Białystok.
The Chodkiewicz family established this settlement during the 15th century, building a castle and founding an Orthodox monastery. The monastery relocated to Supraśl in 1498, marking an important shift in the village's religious life.
The village brought together people from different faiths who lived side by side, including Catholics, Orthodox believers, Evangelicals, and Jews. This religious diversity shaped community life for centuries.
The village is connected by bus services to the regional center of Białystok, making it accessible to visitors. Proximity to the Belarus border influences local conditions and what you may encounter when visiting.
The village once had five major synagogues serving its small population before World War II. In 1897, Jewish residents made up roughly 78 percent of the population.
