Saint Demetrius church in Stary Dzików, Eastern Orthodox church in Stary Dzików, Poland.
Saint Demetrius Church is a brick structure built in a cross shape with a central dome rising above the roof. Three-part decorative windows are distributed across the facade and give the building its distinctive appearance.
The building was constructed in 1904 and served the Greek Catholic community until 1950. Following the resettlement of the Ukrainian population, it was temporarily converted for storage purposes.
The name honors Saint Demetrius, a venerated figure in Eastern Orthodox tradition. Walking through the interior, you can see how Byzantine styles merge with regional Polish construction methods from that era.
You can walk through the interior of the church, which still holds props from film production including preserved wooden bunk beds. It helps to explore the space carefully and move through different rooms to discover all the details.
The location served as a filming site for director Andrzej Wajda's Oscar-nominated film Katyn, where it portrayed the Kozielsk monastery. This connection to cinema history has brought the church additional recognition and visitors interested in the film's legacy.
