Saint Demetrius church in Szczawnik

Saint Demetrius Church is a wooden Orthodox house of worship with a shingled roof and three distinct sections built in the local Lemko architectural style. The structure displays the handcrafted wooden building traditions characteristic of the region.

The building was originally constructed in 1841 as a Greek Catholic place of worship and stands as one of the older sacred structures in the area. Multiple renovations throughout the 20th century have preserved it to the present day.

The church bears the name of Saint Demetrius and features interior wall paintings created between 1936 and 1937 that shape its appearance today. These paintings tell of the religious traditions that have been important to the local community.

The building sits at the base of Pusta Wielka mountain in the Sądecki Beskids region and is surrounded by hilly, forested terrain. Visitors should note that the location is mountainous and sturdy footwear is recommended for the area.

The interior houses a late baroque iconostasis from the 19th century featuring intricate carving and decoration. The side altars display religious scenes such as the Transfiguration of Christ and the Mourning of Christ.
