St. James Church, Powroźnik

The wooden church in Powroźnik is a three-part wooden structure with a sanctuary, nave, and women's gallery built in traditional Lemko style. The building displays the characteristic craftsmanship of the region with its distinctive wooden construction and roof forms.

The original structure dates from 1600 and was relocated and rebuilt in 1813 due to flooding threats. Parts of the original building were incorporated into the present-day sacristy, showing the place's continuous history.

The church is dedicated to Saint James the Younger and reflects the religious traditions of the Lemko people who shaped this region over centuries. Visitors can observe how the local community's faith is expressed through the building's design and its interior arrangements.

Decorative polychrome paintings from 1607 adorn the interior walls and rank among the oldest preserved religious artworks in wooden churches of the Polish Carpathians. These early paintings offer a rare glimpse into the artistic practices and faith of the Lemko from that period.
