Dębina, Island nature complex in Szczecin, Poland
Dębina is a nature reserve covering around 500 hectares between the Western Odra River and Lake Dąbie. The terrain is crisscrossed by waterways and canals, with forests, meadows, and wetland areas throughout.
The area was known as Groß Oderbruch before 1945 and served as a fishing ground for local inhabitants. After World War II, it was transformed into a protected nature reserve focused on conservation and recreation.
Environmental groups regularly organize nature workshops and conservation activities on the island. These programs connect local people with the forests and waterways that define the landscape.
Two boat marinas provide access points for exploring the waterways and natural areas. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear as terrain conditions vary with the season and wet areas are common throughout.
The northern section beyond the canal is named Ziemia Umbriagi, honoring a famous harbor cat from Szczecin. This unusual naming reflects the area's maritime heritage and its connection to the city's seafaring history.
