Selmęt Mały, Lake in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland
Selmęt Mały is a lake in the southern part of Ełk covering roughly 20 hectares with depths reaching about 22 meters. Forest areas edge the northern and southeastern shores, creating natural boundaries around the water.
The area around this lake was home to the Yotvingians, a Baltic people who settled in these lands during the early Middle Ages. Their presence shaped the cultural history of the Masurian region that continues to be remembered today.
The northern shore shows traces of former military use, reflecting how armed forces once made this area part of their presence. Visitors can see remnants of what was once a recreation spot for soldiers stationed nearby.
The lake sits about 2.4 kilometers from Ełk city center, making it easy to reach from town. Surrounding forests provide natural walking areas and outdoor recreation space without developed facilities.
This lake connects to the larger Selmęt Wielki through a small stream, making them part of a single linked water system. This connection forms one piece of the broader network of lakes throughout the Ełk district.
