Market Square in Wieliczka, rynek miejski w Wieliczce
The Market Square in Wieliczka is a square-shaped plaza in the town center measuring about 75 meters (250 feet) on each side. Neoclassical buildings including the Pałac Przychockich surround the space, and streets connect from each corner to different neighborhoods.
The square was granted town rights under King Kazimierz Wielki in 1290, when the town was fortified with walls and towers for defense. A major fire in 1877 destroyed the wooden structures, after which the square was rebuilt with permanent stone buildings that remain today.
The square reflects the town's deep connection to salt mining through stone carvings of miners emerging from the ground and an old mining cart. Local people use the space regularly for meetings and gatherings, keeping this historical legacy alive in their daily routines.
The square is easily accessible with cobblestone paths that make walking around comfortable. Benches are available for resting, and visitors can enter the space freely at any time without restrictions.
One of the largest 3D murals in the country, called Solny Swiat, decorates a building wall on the square and draws visitors with its three-dimensional illusion. This contemporary artwork creates an interesting contrast with the historical structures surrounding it.
