Crib in Panewniki, Nativity scene at Basilica in Katowice Panewniki, Poland.
The Crib in Panewniki is a nativity scene displayed inside the Basilica of Panewniki in the Ligota-Panewniki district of Katowice, Poland. It fills a large section of the church interior with hand-crafted figures arranged around the birth of Jesus.
The Franciscan friars who have cared for the Basilica of Panewniki since the early 20th century brought with them the tradition of building nativity scenes, rooted in the example of Saint Francis of Assisi. Over the decades the display grew and became a fixed part of Christmas life in this part of Katowice.
People gather here during Christmas to attend services and community celebrations in a shared religious experience. The display connects Christian imagery with Polish customs, creating a focal point for seasonal worship.
The display is set up and lit from December through January, so a visit outside those months will not show the nativity scene. The basilica sits in a quiet residential area and is easy to reach on foot from the nearest tram stop.
The nativity scene in Panewniki is considered one of the largest of its kind in Europe, drawing visitors from across the region each year. Despite its scale, it is assembled and maintained each year by the same community of friars and local volunteers.
