Kołobrzeg Fortress, Military fortress in Kołobrzeg, Poland
Kołobrzeg Fortress is a military installation at the mouth of the Parsęta River featuring multiple defensive walls, moats, and fortification structures across its grounds. The site comprises several bastions and smaller forts that together create a layered defense system.
Built between 1770 and 1774, the fortress served as a key military installation through major conflicts including the Napoleonic Wars and World War II. Its position protecting the coastal harbor made it strategically important during several European conflicts.
The fortress hosts exhibitions showing how defensive architecture and military techniques changed from the 18th century onward. Visitors can see displays about the different periods of warfare and the structures built to defend them.
The fortress is open to visitors daily, with guided tours available in multiple languages that explain the layout and structure of different fortifications. The best time to visit is during warmer months when weather conditions make exploring the grounds more comfortable.
The fortress contains Fort Morast, named after surrounding marshlands, which served as a strategic defense point protecting the harbor approaches. This smaller fort was crucial for controlling waterways and provided additional protective layers against attacks from the sea.
