Wyspa Refulacyjna, Artificial island in Szczecin Lagoon, Poland
Wyspa Refulacyjna is an artificial island in Szczecin Lagoon created through sediment deposit practices. It sits near the port of Trzebież and helps shield shipping channels in the area from wave action and erosion.
The island was built in the late 1800s using material from port excavations in the area. It was expanded further between 1996 and 1997 to continue supporting regional maritime infrastructure.
The island, formerly named Wellen-Brecher until 1945, represents the maritime engineering practices of the West Pomeranian region.
The island sits within a Natura 2000 protected area near the Oder River mouth and is not typically open to the public. Visitors can best observe it from the water when exploring the port and lagoon areas.
The island takes its name from the refulacja process, a specialized technique of depositing sediment materials to maintain shipping lanes and manage coastal erosion. This engineering method has shaped West Pomeranian port development for generations.
