European Bison Sanctuary, Bison sanctuary and zoo in Warnowo, Poland
The European Bison Sanctuary is an animal facility in Warnowo, inside Wolin National Park, dedicated to European bison and other forest animals. The enclosures are set within natural woodland, giving the animals space to move and graze much as they would in the wild.
The sanctuary was founded in 1976 with a small group of European bison brought from forest reserves in eastern Poland. Since then, it has worked steadily to maintain and grow the local population of the species.
The sanctuary serves as a place where visitors connect with European bison and learn about their conservation from staff who work with the animals daily. The setting encourages people to think about the role these creatures play in Poland's natural world.
The facility sits south of Międzyzdroje in Warnowo, reached by road through the national park. It is worth checking opening days before you go and asking staff on arrival about any guided tours on offer.
Alongside the bison, the sanctuary also takes in injured wild boars and deer that need care and rehabilitation. This means a visit can sometimes bring you face to face with a wider range of forest animals than you might expect.
