Jaskinia Piekło pod Skibami

Jaskinia Piekło pod Skibami is a natural cave on the northwestern side of Żakowa Mountain in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. The cave extends 57 meters long with a main corridor of 20 meters, and it has four entrances with the largest one measuring 5 meters wide and 2 meters high.

The cave formed through natural geological processes in an area where silver and lead ore mining was intense from the 15th to 17th centuries. Mining activities during this period left deep marks on the surrounding landscape and regional history.

Local people called this cave Hell because of old stories about dark forces emerging from it during the 18th century. The name reflects how folklore shaped the way communities understood and talked about this underground space.

The cave is easy to enter through its largest opening, which provides good access for visitors. You should wear sturdy shoes and bring a light layer, since the interior stays cool and damp throughout the year.

Several bat species use the cave as a winter shelter, including greater mouse-eared bats, western barbastelles, and gray long-eared bats. These animals spend cold months in the stable temperature environment underground, making it a vital refuge for these creatures.
