Holy Sepulchre Chapel in Żagań, Religious chapel in Żagań, Poland

The Holy Sepulchre Chapel is a stone structure that blends Gothic and Baroque architectural styles, housing three Baroque altars inside. This combination of design elements creates a distinctive visual character that reflects the religious importance of the place.

The chapel was built in 1598 under Abbot Jakub II of the Żagań Augustinian convent, replacing an earlier wooden structure. The stone construction arose during a period when such recreations of sacred sites became common throughout Central Europe.

The chapel was designed as an exact reproduction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre layout, with architects drawing inspiration from similar structures in Görlitz. Visitors encounter a representation of the sacred site in Jerusalem, even while standing in Poland.

The chapel is located next to the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and both can be visited during regular hours. It makes sense to explore both buildings during the same visit, as they sit directly beside each other.

The chapel has undergone careful restoration that preserved and protected its original Renaissance and Baroque details. These restoration efforts have revived the fine craftsmanship of earlier periods and safeguarded the structure for future generations.
