Kamienica Pod Okrętem is a four-story townhouse on Świętojańska Street in Warsaw's Old Town with a three-axis facade. A Renaissance-style entrance portal is decorated with a carved sailing ship that stands out on the building's front.
The building was constructed in 1642 by goldsmith Stanisław Zalewski and later passed to merchants who modified it during the 1700s. After World War II destroyed much of the Old Town, architect Stefan Krasiński carefully rebuilt it from 1949 to 1955.
The sailing ship carved above the doorway reflects Warsaw's history as a trading hub and the connection between residents and river commerce. Today you can still see this maritime symbol when you walk past, and it remains part of what the Old Town neighborhood represents.
The building is in Warsaw's Old Town and easily accessible on foot from the main square. You can see the ship carving and Renaissance details from the street at no cost, making it a simple addition to walking tours of the historic neighborhood.
The basement and ground floor walls survived the wartime bombing and gave the rebuilding architect a foundation to reconstruct the upper levels accurately. These surviving walls were crucial guides for restoring the building to its original appearance.
