Church of SS Peter and Paul in Stopnica, Gothic church in Stopnica, Poland.
The Church of SS Peter and Paul is a Gothic house of worship with limestone walls, buttresses, and varied roof types including gable, hip, and domed forms. The building displays the craftsmanship and construction methods typical of its medieval era.
The church was built between 1350 and 1376 under Casimir the Great and replaced a brick structure from the 13th century. Before the stone building came, a wooden temple had stood on the site since the 11th century.
Inside, the space displays Gothic vaulting and stone pieces decorated with family crests, showing how people expressed their status and faith in this place over time. These objects reflect the lives and hopes of those who worshipped here across generations.
The building sits in the town center of Stopnica, making it easy to reach on foot and explore the surroundings at your own pace. To visit inside, arrange ahead since group visits or guided access require prior notice.
After World War Two, when the building was about 80 percent destroyed, it was reconstructed using surviving pieces from the original medieval structure. This rebuilding preserved medieval elements that had endured, allowing the site to recover its role.
