Saint Michael Archangel church in Gniezno

Saint Michael Archangel Church is a Gothic building in central Gniezno featuring a distinctive octagonal tower on its main facade. The structure has a three-walled apse and blends Gothic elements with Renaissance details including varied cornices and arched openings.

Construction started around 1524 when Jan and Elzbieta Shemetovich commissioned the building to replace a wooden structure that previously stood on this site. The church later survived military conflicts in the mid-1600s that left physical marks on its walls.

The church reflects how religious buildings shaped the spiritual life of Gniezno over centuries. Locals and visitors alike experience it as a living place where faith and daily routines intersect.

The church is open to visitors during regular hours and continues to hold religious services throughout the week. Public transport stops are located nearby, making it easy to reach on foot from the city center.

A cannonball mark is still visible on one of the church walls, a physical reminder from the military conflicts of the 1600s. This scar tells visitors about the hardships the building endured over the centuries.
