Saint Michael Archangel church in Świebodzin, Gothic church in Świebodzin, Poland.
Saint Michael Archangel church is a Gothic building with a pentagonal chancel, three naves, and pointed-arch windows. Brick buttresses reinforce the outer walls, creating the strong structural framework typical of medieval construction.
The church was originally dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul in 1311. A fire in 1541 caused major damage, leading to reconstruction directed by architects Georg Jakob Kurtz and Thomas Heintzio.
Inside you find a late Gothic altarpiece made by a master from Gościeszowice, with Rococo saint sculptures and a working pipe organ. These pieces reflect how the church served as a space where people gathered to worship and experience beauty together.
The building at Szpitalna 2A is open to visitors but requires advance notice by telephone. This arrangement allows you time to explore the medieval architecture without rushing.
Between 1850 and 1858 the building underwent major renewal with an arcaded porch added and new Gothic details applied to the western facade. This later work remains a visible part of the structure you see today.
