Krywałd

Krywałd is an industrial district in Knurów that developed around coal mining activity in southern Silesia. The area contains apartment blocks from the mining era alongside parks and buildings from factories and collieries.

The settlement originated in the 15th century and appears in records from 1458 under the name Crigewald. Rapid growth followed when coal mining became the main economic activity in the 1800s.

The district shows traces of Silesian mining traditions in its architecture and neighborhood patterns. You can see how workers' families organized their lives around the colliery, creating tight-knit communities that still exist today.

The district has regular bus connections to nearby cities including Gliwice and Zabrze in Upper Silesia. Getting around the area on foot is straightforward, as the main streets form a simple layout.

This district was home to Poland's first ammonia synthesis plant, built in the early 1900s. The facility helped establish Poland as a producer of chemical fertilizers used nationwide.
