Omulew, Lake in gmina Nidzica, Poland
Omulef-See is a natural lake in the gmina of Nidzica, in northern Poland. It has a long, winding shape with several small islands and a shoreline that alternates between sandy and muddy sections.
The lake lies within the historic region of Masuria, which passed through the hands of the Teutonic Knights and later Prussia before becoming part of Poland after 1945. The German name of the lake dates from that long period of German administration.
The name Omulef-See is German in origin, a reminder of the time when this region was administered by German-speaking authorities. Today, the lake is used mostly by local anglers and walkers who follow the shoreline at their own pace.
The lake is most easily reached by car, as local roads run close to the shoreline. Those planning to spend a full day should bring sturdy footwear and food, since there are few facilities nearby.
The lake has 4 small islands that are hard to spot from the shore but become visible from a boat. These islands are undeveloped and serve mainly as resting spots for water birds.
