Zachodni Park in Warsaw

Zachodni Park in Warsaw, Urban park in Ochota district, Warsaw, Poland

Zachodni Park stretches across a roughly 30-meter-high mound in Warsaw and offers numerous walking paths, seating areas, and a children's playground. The green space combines recreational facilities with memorial functions, creating a versatile place for visitors of different ages.

The park was built on rubble remains from Warsaw's destruction during World War II, when much of the city lay in ruins. The transformation of the mound shows how this place of devastation became a space for the community.

The concrete square and stairs incorporate material from the original wartime rubble, and a kotwica symbol marks the Polish resistance memorial. Visitors can discover these elements throughout the park and experience how history is woven into the everyday space.

The park is easily accessible on foot and offers various paths with different difficulty levels for visitors of all abilities. Seating areas are spread throughout the mound, so visitors can rest along the way and enjoy the surroundings.

The site received the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2024 for combining memorial functions with environmental benefits. This recognition highlights how innovative urban development can preserve history while serving the modern community.
