The Centre for Contemporary Art Elektrownia operates within a building from the turn of the 20th century and contains exhibition galleries distributed across multiple floors alongside an arthouse cinema. The building opened as a municipal power station in 1901 and operated as a production facility for decades before closing. A comprehensive renovation led to its reopening in 2014 as a venue dedicated to contemporary art and film.
The name Elektrownia refers to its past as a power facility and signals what visitors will encounter inside. Contemporary artworks are displayed against the backdrop of preserved industrial machinery and pipe systems that remain part of the interior landscape.
The venue sits in an industrial area of the city that remains accessible by public transportation and foot traffic. Comfortable shoes are recommended since exhibitions span multiple levels and stairways connect the different gallery spaces throughout the building.
Filmmaker Andrzej Wajda donated artworks from his personal collection to the institution, creating the foundation for its exhibitions. This gift reflects how the project gained credibility and direction from a major figure in Polish cultural life.
