Skansen in Markowa, Open-air museum in Markowa, Poland
Skansen w Markowej is an open-air museum displaying traditional wooden buildings, farm structures, and a working mill spread across its grounds in eastern Poland. The site arranges these structures to show how a rural village was organized.
The museum was created in 1985 to preserve the building styles of Markowa village, which was founded in 1384 and developed its own architectural traditions. This region became known for its distinctive wooden construction methods.
The site displays handcrafted items and agricultural tools that show how rural people worked and spent their time during the 19th century. Walking through, you see objects that reveal the daily skills and trades that supported village life.
The grounds are walkable with paths connecting the buildings and plenty of space to move around between structures. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for weather conditions since much of the experience happens outdoors.
One noteworthy feature is a cottage from 1874 that was moved to the site from elsewhere, keeping its original details like wooden posts and thatched roof intact. The building shows how ordinary village families lived during that period.
